Navigating the Student Learning Map
This article provides an overview of MindPlay's Student Learning Map, explaining how students navigate their personalized learning journey through interactive nodes and themed biomes.

Overview

The Student Learning Map clearly visualizes students' learning path, providing a structured yet flexible approach to skill development. This interactive feature empowers students by making their learning journey visible, helping them understand the progression of skills while introducing elements of choice to increase engagement and motivation.

Map Structure and Navigation

The Student Learning Map presents a series of circular "nodes" that represent individual learning activities. Each node appears in one of five possible states:

Disabled: Activities are not yet available

Enabled: Activities are ready for the student to begin

In Progress: Activities the student has started but not completed

Complete: Activities the student has successfully finished

Locked: Activities appear in this state when the student is required to practice fluency before starting any content on the map.

A white ring around a node indicates it is enabled. Students can select any node with a white ring.

Activity Types and Skill Development

The Student Learning Map integrates various activity types, each represented by a unique icon:

Phonics: Building letter-sound connections

Grammar: Developing sentence structure understanding

Vocabulary: Expanding word knowledge

Decodable Books: Applying phonics skills to connected text

* After reading the assigned decodable book, students will automatically return to the Reading Coach.

Assessment: Measuring progress and mastery

Phonemic Awareness: Developing sound manipulation skills

This comprehensive approach addresses all key components of reading development, supporting students in building a solid foundation for literacy success.

Student Choice and Learning Pathways

The Student Learning Map introduces elements of choice at strategic points in the learning journey. When two nodes appear on the same row, students may choose which activity to complete first. However, both activities must be completed before advancing to the next node below. This opportunity for choice fosters autonomy and engagement while maintaining a clear progression. It ensures that students master foundational skills before moving on to more complex concepts, keeping learning within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and providing an appropriate level of challenge.

Biome Theming and Progression

As students advance through the learning map, they transition through different biomes, each with distinct visual theming reflected in the headers and node designs. This engaging visual progression is a motivational tool, allowing students to see their journey unfold across different environments.

Upon completing all nodes within a biome, students are rewarded with the reveal of an animal specific to that environment—a celebration of achievement that encourages continued progress.

Benefits for Student Learning

The Student Learning Map enhances the learning experience by:

  • Providing a clear visualization of the learning progression
  • Offering transparency in skill development pathways
  • Introducing appropriate levels of student choice
  • Creating a motivational framework with biome transitions and rewards
  • Supporting student autonomy within a structured learning environment

The map's design reflects MindPlay's commitment to systematic instruction and student engagement. It creates an experience that keeps students motivated while ensuring they develop all critical reading skills in the optimal sequence.
