Setting Intervention Intensity
This article offers step-by-step guidance on setting intervention intensity.

The Importance of Student Reading Goals

Setting reading goals for students is essential because it encourages consistent progress, fosters motivation, and helps develop a sense of achievement. By establishing clear, personalized targets, students can focus on improving specific reading skills, track their growth, and stay engaged in learning. Reading goals also provide structure and direction, ensuring students are challenged at the right level and working toward mastering key literacy skills that support long-term academic success.

Watch this video for a step-by-step guide to setting intervention intensity.

Guidance for Intervention Intensity

Intensive (100%): For students who need the most support. These students should spend all their time with the Coach for targeted intervention.

Targeted (80%): For students who are more than two grade levels behind and have limited time in the program (fewer than 120 minutes).

Developing (60%): For students approaching grade-level expectations or with strong program usage (more than 120 minutes).

Supplemental (40% or less): For students at or near grade level, but still benefit from time in Coach to close any remaining knowledge gaps.

Setting Goals for Students and Class

When students log in, access to the Library is based on their progress in Coach lessons. If a student’s Coach-to-Library ratio falls below the target, they will temporarily have access only to the Coach map. This ensures they spend the necessary time in instructional activities before returning to independent reading.

It’s important to help students understand why the Library and books are locked and how much time or progress they need to complete in the Coach before reading becomes available again.

1. Choose the student or class, then select the edit button.

2. Use the slider to set the intervention intensity.

Intervention Intensity Example

This example is based on the settings and details shown in the screenshot above. It illustrates how students logging into Studio four times per week can maintain intervention intensity.
