Comprehension Scope and Sequence for Multilingual Learners (MLs)
This article explains how MindPlay's instructional approach supports multilingual learners (MLs) by prioritizing frequent comprehension instruction while maintaining targeted fluency practice.

Supporting Comprehension Development for Multilingual Learners

For multilingual learners (MLs), clicking on the Daily Fluency activity will launch the student's assigned comprehension four times per week and fluency practice once per week. The comprehension lesson is intentionally delivered through the Daily Fluency pathway and will count toward the student's daily activity completion. As a result, completing the comprehension lesson will fill the student's Daily Fluency circle, allowing ML students to maintain the same visual progress and completion tracking as other students while receiving instruction that is aligned to their specific learning needs.

This differentiated approach recognizes that multilingual learners may benefit from additional opportunities to develop the language, vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension skills needed to understand and learn from text. While fluency remains an important component of reading development, the ML pathway places greater emphasis on comprehension, helping students move beyond simply reading words on the page to constructing meaning, interpreting text, and accessing academic content. By combining frequent comprehension instruction with ongoing fluency practice, MindPlay supports MLs in developing the skills they need to become confident, independent readers across academic settings.
