Understanding Student Lexile®
This article explains how a student's Lexile® level is determined and how it's used to personalize their library for tailored reading recommendations.

What is a Lexile® Measure?

A Lexile® measure is valuable information about an individual’s reading ability or the complexity of a text, such as a book or article. It can range from below 200L for emergent readers to above 1600L for advanced readers.

How is a student’s Lexile® calculated?

The student’s reading level from Signals initializes their Lexile level. If they do not take the Universal Screener, their grade level is used for initial placement. Students respond to cloze questions in Power text, and responses are automatically sent to MetaMetrics to calculate their Lexile® level. A student’s Lexile® level is assessed and updated every 15th & 30/31st of the month based on their performance on cloze assessments embedded within the Power Text they read. If their Lexile® level increases or decreases, their Power Text options will go to the corresponding level.

What are the Grade Level Goals?

What is a Power Text?

Power Texts are books within a student’s current Lexile® level or Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The student’s ZPD represents the space between what they can do unsupported and what they cannot, even with support. This level provides opportunities for students to practice and develop new reading skills in a supportive environment.

What is a Power Text Mode?

Power Text mode, or Flip Flop mode, allows students to alternate between Power Text and Free Text. Power Texts have a Lexile® range of 200 above or below their Lexile Level. For example, if a student has a Lexile® level of 700L, their Power Text will range from 500 to 900L. Free Text Mode allows students to read any book in their library regardless of the Lexical range but within their grade level.

Students alternate between reading Power Text and Free Reading. They need to complete a book for Flip-Flop mode to work. When students first begin reading in the library, they start in Power Text and read a book in their ZPD. Once they complete a Power Text, they flip-flop to Free Reading, where they can read any text in their grade level range. Students will return to Power Text mode when they complete a text in Free mode or when seven days pass.
