Overview
MindPlay Reading Studio provides scaffolded language assistance, adapted instructional pathways, and targeted accommodations designed to help multilingual learners access content, develop English language proficiency, and strengthen literacy skills. These supports are designed to address the unique language and literacy needs of multilingual learners while helping them engage with grade-appropriate instruction and build the skills needed for reading comprehension and academic success.
Language Support Settings for Multilingual Learners
MindPlay's Virtual Coaches already model explicit, multisensory instruction. These enhancements extend that delivery model to close ML-specific gaps, rather than asking teachers to supplement with separate materials. The following section describes the four available Language Pathway settings and how each supports multilingual learners.

Enable Language Pathways
- Additional Phonological Awareness: Sounds that don't exist in a student's home language often go unaddressed. MindPlay Coaches give ML students extra, explicit instruction on English sounds, closing the phonological gap directly.
- Developing Understanding Before Automaticity: For MLs, fluency is secondary to meaning. MindPlay Coaches prioritize comprehension over fluency, and lesson text is read aloud to remove a decoding barrier while students build comprehension and vocabulary.
- Reordered Grammar Sequence: MLs need language functions first (e.g., asking questions, following directions, expressing needs) so they can participate in class from day one. The Grammar for Meaning scope and sequence is reordered based on Second Language Acquisition principles.
- Cognate-Based Support Sheets (coming soon): Downloadable resources for teachers help students build on the language they already know. By connecting familiar words in their home language to English, cognates strengthen vocabulary development, make instruction more accessible, and build early confidence.
Include Spanish Books in the Student's Library
Enabling this setting adds Spanish-language texts to the student's Personalized Library, providing access to reading materials in the student's native language. This support helps multilingual learners engage with content, build background knowledge, and strengthen literacy skills while developing English proficiency.
Provide Spanish-Specific Instructional Supports
- Spanish Annotations in Library Books: Provides Spanish annotations within selected library books to support multilingual learners in understanding key vocabulary and concepts while reading. These annotations provide language support that helps students access and comprehend English-language texts.
- Support Sheet Recommendations: Provides recommended instructional support sheets, such as cognate activities, to help multilingual learners make connections between Spanish and English. These resources support vocabulary development, language transfer, and comprehension by leveraging students' existing language knowledge.
Provide Assessment Directions in Spanish
MindPlay provides Spanish-voiced assessment instructions to support multilingual learners who may benefit from hearing directions in Spanish. This feature helps students understand assessment directions more clearly, reducing the impact of language barriers and allowing them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills more accurately.
