Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN)
This article explains the importance of RAN, details how to assign it, describes the student experience, and outlines the grading criteria.

What is RAN?

Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to name a series of familiar items aloud quickly. Research has shown that performance on RAN tasks strongly predicts reading performance in early learning and later grades. This means that when paired with Phonological Awareness screening, RAN tests can identify students who may benefit from early intervention or require additional screening.

What is the student experience?

1. The student will listen to the letter names in the RAN assessment.

2. The student will complete a trial before beginning the assessment.

3. The student will complete the RAN assessment.

How do I assign RAN?

RAN assessments can be assigned through the Assignments tab in the Teacher Dashboard, allowing educators to assign them to individual students, groups, or the entire class.

How do I review the assessment?

RAN scores are reported in the Assignments tab. The student's number of correct letters per minute is their RAN score. Teachers can listen to the student’s entire recording or an individual letter and adjust the grading.

What are the Student Goals?

The RAN assessment is designed for students in kindergarten and first grade.
