Overview
MindPlay integrates writing exercises into students' reading workflows to reinforce comprehension and analytical skills. These writing features span across different activities and are manageable by teachers to fit their instructional goals. Teachers can turn writing activities on and off in the Rostering tab.

Fluency Writing Features
Every fifth story, students receive a reflective writing prompt in place of standard comprehension questions. This feature can be turned on or off based on specific instructional needs.
Question Preview
Before beginning a fluency story, students are shown the writing prompt they will answer afterward. This simulates the process of reading for information, an essential skill for standardized tests and real-life scenarios.
Grading
Automated Scoring: The response is automatically scored by AI and can be viewed on the student dashboard under the Fluency tab.
- Teacher Review: Teachers can review each student’s complete response and adjust the rubric-based score as needed for accurate evaluation by clicking on the score.
- Visual Indicator: The writing assignment is indicated by an orange circle on the activities graph.
Library Writing Features
Teachers can assign books with text-based writing prompts to students in grades 3 and above. The prompts include persuasive, expository, and narrative writing tasks to support a range of writing skills.
Filters for Writing
Teachers can filter and sort library books by specific writing skills, including persuasive, expository, and narrative writing prompts, to view the books available for assignment. Teachers can then assign these books to their entire class or to individual students based on their Lexile® level.
Book Settings
Using the More Actions tab, teachers can view a book's written response questions before deciding to hide or assign the book.
Grading
- Reporting: Written responses are reported in the Action Center tab.
- Evaluation: Submissions are initially graded by AI. Teachers can read the student's entire submission and manually adjust the rubric score using the provided evaluation rubrics.
