Mastering Language Patterns: Enhancing Comprehension and Writing with MindPlay Grammar for Meaning
This article outlines the key details of grammar instruction in Coach.

Instruction

MindPlay Grammar for Meaning provides explicit instruction in English language skills, helping students recognize language patterns to enhance reading comprehension and writing abilities. Through a series of lessons and activities, students understand that grammar knowledge means the ability to recognize patterns in language. As they progress, students learn to use visualization and mental imagery as comprehension strategies. Adaptive activities guide them to identify, sort, and manipulate parts of speech while organizing sentences and paragraphs of increasing complexity.

Each lesson opens with a brief introduction and includes up to seven instructional segments. Lessons feature a video component, instruction from a reading coach, and graphics that illustrate or summarize key concepts.

Activities

Following instruction, students complete three activities to practice each concept. To achieve mastery, a score of 100% must be attained on all assigned activities. If students respond correctly to the activities tied to an assignment, they are credited with mastery of the lesson. If a student answers incorrectly, the coach provides feedback based on the response, allowing a second attempt. If the second attempt is also incorrect, the coach offers specific feedback with the correct answer before moving on to the next question. The activity continues until all questions are attempted. Incorrect answers trigger additional instruction and a new activity assignment.

Pathing

All Students take a pre-test at the beginning of each lesson set to determine assigned lessons. After mastering all assigned lessons in a set, the student takes a post-test covering all the lessons. Lessons are reassigned as needed based on student performance.

Assessment

Pre Test

When students are directed to Grammar for Meaning for the first time, they are given a pretest to establish a baseline score. Lessons are grouped into five sets. Students identify the correct words, sentence parts, and sentence types from the options given. The items tested ensure that each lesson contained within the test set is seen at least twice. The student receives instruction only on the lessons they need to pass on the pre-test.

Post Test

When a student has mastered all the assigned lessons within a lesson set, a post-test is given to ensure readiness for the next lesson set.  Post-test for lesson sets 1-4 covers only the lessons included in those sets. The Post-test for lesson set 5 covers all Grammar for Meaning lessons 1-59. Any lesson not mastered is automatically reassigned. When a student scores less than 80% on the test, all lessons for incorrect questions are reassigned. When reassigned lessons and activities are mastered, the student retakes the post-test. A score of  80% or higher is required to move on to the next section.
